Introduction to the Bank:
Habib Bank Limited (HBL), headquartered in Habib Bank Plaza in Karachi, Pakistan, is a multinational bank with a rich history dating back to 1940 when it was founded by the Habib family. It was Pakistan’s first commercial bank and made its mark in the banking industry by opening its first international branch in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1951. Over the years, HBL has grown significantly and expanded its operations globally, with more than 1700 branches in 25 countries across four continents.
In addition to its extensive branch network, HBL has a strong presence in the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) based in Geneva, Switzerland, where it holds a significant stake. The bank’s headquarters was moved to the Habib Bank Plaza, the tallest building in South Asia, in 1972. However, in 1974, the government nationalized HBL, only to privatize it again in 2003.
